Otsu City (大津市) serves as the capital city of Shiga Prefecture. It is situated on the southwestern shore of Lake Biwa, which is the largest lake in Japan and accounts for one-sixth of the prefecture’s total area. The city was established as a municipality in 1898. Otsu City is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, with its lakeside and mountainous areas attracting numerous tourists.
The city’s topography can be divided into two main areas. The area along the western shore of Lake Biwa and the right bank of the Seta River consists of a narrow and elongated plain, featuring many settlements. Conversely, the left bank of the Seta River comprises hilly terrain and mountainous regions.
Otsu City is famous for its three major festivals: the “Otsu Festival” in October, the “Sanno Festival” in April, and the “Funasuka Festival” in August. These festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm and uphold traditional customs and formalities.
