Tenri City (天理市) is a city located in the northern part of Nara Prefecture, with a population of approximately 70,000 people. The city’s name derives from the founding of Tenrikyo by Nakayama Miki in 1838 (Tenpo 9). Tenri City is a charming place blessed with abundant nature and numerous historical resources. In particular, the “Yamanohe no Michi,” known as Japan’s oldest national highway, is a popular hiking trail, attracting many visitors on weekends.
On the other hand, the city is crisscrossed with many roads and is popular as a bedroom community, as it is located within approximately 30 kilometers of central Osaka. One of its renowned traditional industries is the production of “fusuma no hikite” (sliding door handles), which currently accounts for 90 percent of the national production.
In the outskirts of the city, rural areas remain, and agriculture continues to thrive, including the cultivation of tea leaves. Transportation in Tenri City includes two railway lines, the JR Sakurai Line and the Kintetsu Tenri Line, as well as major roads such as the Meihan National Highway and the Keinawa Expressway, with National Route 24 running through the city.
