Ikoma City (いこまし) is located in the northwestern part of Nara Prefecture, adjacent to Osaka and Kyoto Prefectures. It has become a growing city as a bedroom community since the period of high economic growth, and it is easily accessible to the central area of Osaka from the city’s central station, Kintetsu Ikoma Station, in about 20 minutes.
The symbol of the city is “Mount Ikoma.” The Ikoma Taisha Shrine, established in the Edo period, is affectionately known as “Seiten-san” and the area around it prospered as a temple town. A cable car is also available, and near the mountaintop, there is an amusement park and an observatory. It is famous as a spot for night views and attracts many tourists throughout the year.
In Ikoma City, traditional crafts such as tea whisks (chasen) and other tea utensils are actively produced as part of its cultural heritage. Additionally, there are numerous research institutes and higher education institutions, making it a city with aspects of a cultural and academic hub.
