Akashi City has a population of approximately 300,000 people, making it the fifth-largest city in the prefecture. It transitioned to a core city in 2018 and established a child consultation center in 2019.
Located along the Seto Inland Sea, it offers stunning views of Awaji Island across the Akashi Strait and enjoys a mild climate. It is known for being the picturesque setting where many poems were composed by the ancient poet Kanemori Maro.
Furthermore, it holds significance as it lies on the Japan Standard Time Meridian at 135 degrees east longitude. Additionally, it serves as a vital hub for both land and sea transportation, connecting the Hanshin metropolitan area, the Harima Coastal Region, and across the sea to Awaji Island and Shikoku. In 2020, it was designated as an SDGs Future City, actively promoting initiatives centered around sustainable development goals (SDGs) as a foundation for urban development.
