Fukuchiyama City, the second city in Kyoto Prefecture, was established in 1937. It has a rich history dating back to the time of Mitsuhide Akechi, who pacified the Tanba region. Over the years, it flourished as a castle town and later evolved into a city known for its railways and commerce since the Meiji era. On January 1, 2006, Fukuchiyama City merged with the adjacent towns of Sanwa, Yodogawa, and Oe, forming the new and expanded Fukuchiyama City.
